My parent's native country is El Salvador. El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America. El Salvador sits on the Pacific Ocean and borders Honduras and Guatemala. This tiny country is dominated by several volcanoes. The volcanoes spew lava, which over many years, created fertile farmland. Coffee beans are the major crop grown in the country. El Salvador has a tropical climate with two seasons: Rainy and dry
From 1980 to 1992, the country was engaged in a civil war because people were tired of being treated unfairly. This is when my parents fled the country. During the civil war The United States supported the El Salvadoran government. Guerilla troops fought against the government. Finally, in January of 1992, a peace treaty was signed with the El Salvadoran government. Since then, conditions for the country and people have slowly improved.
The most common traditional food in El Salvador is pupusas. A pupusa is a traditional Salvadoran dish of a thick corn tortilla stuffed with a savory filling that consist of chopped pork, cheese, beans, zucchini, and other vegetables. It is typically accompanied by "curtido", which is slaw that is a combination of cabbage, carrots, and onions in a vinegary, spicy brine. Pupusas are also accompanied by tomato salsa
